Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NR
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
Fraser's Eagle-Owl (Bubo poensis) and Nduk Eagle-Owl (Bubo vosseleri) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include vosseleri as a subspecies of Fraser's Eagle-Owl (Bubo poensis).
Similar Species
Spotted Eagle-Owl (Bubo africanus) which is smaller, with white spotting on wing-coverts, white mantle-edging, and yellow eyes.
