Subspecies
Forms a species group with Siberian Accentor (Prunella montanella), Mongolian Accentor (Prunella koslowi), Black-throated Accentor (Prunella atrogularis), Radde's Accentor (Prunella ocularis) and Arabian Accentor (Prunella fagani). Radde's Accentor (Prunella ocularis) and Arabian Accentor (Prunella fagani) formerly treated as subspecies of Brown Accentor (Prunella fulvescens) or as forming a superspecies with it. Racial differentiation complicated owing to individual variation (partly age-related, also influenced by plumage wear) and occurrence of intermediates. Described subspecies sushkini (from extreme southern Xizang, in China) synonymized with khamensis.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
dahurica (Taczanowski, 1874) - Eastern Kazakhstan (Tarbagatay), south-central Russia (Altai and Sayan Mts east to Transbaikalia), Mongolia (except western and south-west) and north-eastern China (north-western Manchuria).
mongolica Sushkin, 1925 - Western and south-western Mongolia (Achit Nur, Gobi-Altai) and northern China (western Nei Mongol, northern Ningxia).
fulvescens (Severtsov, 1873) - South-eastern Kazakhstan and western China (east to eastern Xinjiang and north-eastern Xizang) south to central Afghanistan, and western Himalayas (east to extreme northern India).
dresseri Hartert, 1910 - Western China (southern Xinjiang and Qaidam Basin south to Kunlun Mts).
nanschanica Sushkin, 1925 - Central China (north-eastern Qinghai and south-western Gansu south to southern Sichuan).
khamensis Sushkin, 1925 - Southern fringe of Tibetan Plateau in south-western China (southern and south-eastern Xizang, east to Qamdo region) and adjacent northern Nepal and northern Sikkim.
