Subspecies
Mocking Cliff-Chat (Thamnolaea cinnamomeiventris) and White-crowned Cliff-Chat (Thamnolaea coronata) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped as cinnamomeiventris and moved from genus Thamnolaea to the genus Myrmecocichla following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • bambarae (Lafresnaye, 1836)   -  Southern Mauritania, eastern Senegal and south-western Mali. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-crowned Cliff-Chat (Thamnolaea coronata).
  • cavernicola Bates, 1933   -  Central Mali (Mopti). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-crowned Cliff-Chat (Thamnolaea coronata).
  • coronata Reichenow, 1902   -  West-central. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-crowned Cliff-Chat (Thamnolaea coronata).
  • kordofanensis Wettstein, 1916   -  Nuba Mts, in central Sudan.
  • albiscapulata (Rüppell, 1837)   -  Northern Eritrea and north, central and eastern Ethiopia.
  • subrufipennis Reichenow, 1887   -  South-eastern Sudan and south-western Ethiopia south through Rift Valley and Tanzania to eastern Zambia and Malawi.
  • odica Clancey, 1962   -  Eastern Zimbabwe.
  • cinnamomeiventris (Lafresnaye, 1836)   -  Eastern Botswana, eastern South Africa, western Swaziland and Lesotho.
  • autochthones Clancey, 1952   -  Southern Mozambique south to north-eastern South Africa and eastern Swaziland.
