Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-browed Coucal (Centropus superciliosus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• fasciipygialis Reichenow, 1898   -  Eastern Tanzania to eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-browed Coucal (Centropus superciliosus).
• burchellii Swainson, 1838   -  Eastern Botswana to southern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-browed Coucal (Centropus superciliosus).
