Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry and moist forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis). Southern subspecies cyanoleuca has in past been treated as a full species. Subspecies fuscopilea sometimes merged with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • senegalensis (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Senegambia east to Ethiopia and south to western Kenya, north-western Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
  • fuscopilea Reichenow, 1906   -  Sierra Leone to southern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and Congo Basin.
  • cyanoleuca (Vieillot, 1818)   -  North-western Tanzania south to Angola, Botswana and north-eastern South Africa.
