Vidua funerea (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Variable Indigobird (Vidua funerea) and Quailfinch Indigobird (Vidua nigeriae) following Payne and Payne (1994), and Variable Indigobird (Vidua funerea) and Cameroon Indigobird (Vidua camerunensis) following Payne (2004).

Formerly considered a subspecies of Village Indigobird (Vidua chalybeata). Often treated as conspecific with Wilson's Indigobird (Vidua wilsoni), Quailfinch Indigobird (Vidua nigeriae), Baka Indigobird (Vidua larvaticola) and sometimes also with Variable Indigobird (Vidua funerea).
