Subspecies
Black-throated Coucal (Centropus leucogaster) and Neumann's Coucal (Centropus neumanni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Centropus leucogaster following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Range complementary to that of Gabon Coucal (Centropus anselli), suggesting that the two may be allospecies. Subspecies neumanni of Zaire has been considered to be more closely related to Gabon Coucal (Centropus anselli), and perhaps even a distinct species, based mainly on size. Size overlap occurs, but evidence unclear as sexes of specimens were not indicated.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucogaster (Leach, 1814)   -  Southern Senegal and Guinea-Bissau east to south-eastern Nigeria.
  • efulenensis Sharpe, 1904   -  South-western Cameroon and northern Gabon.
  • neumanni Alexander, 1908   -  North-eastern Zaire. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Neumann's Coucal (Centropus neumanni).
