Subspecies
Calyptophilus frugivorus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into Eastern Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus frugivorus) and Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius) following AOU (1998). BirdLife International does not recognise Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius) as a species.
Molecular data suggest that genus does not belong with this family. This species was originally described in genus Phoenicophilus, and subsequently placed in newly erected present genus. Often treated as conspecific with Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius), the enlarged species then consisting of four subspecies, these sharing some characters, which makes clear separation into an eastern species and a western species difficult. Treatment as two distinct species provisional, and further study required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
frugivorus (Cory, 1883) - Samaná Peninsula, on northern coast of Dominican Republic.
neibae Bond & Dod, 1977 - Central mountains of Dominican Republic (east to Reserva Científica de Ebano Verde).
abbotti Richmond & Swales, 1924 - Goní˘ve I (off west-central Hispaniola). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius).
