Subspecies
White-rumped Babbler (Turdoides leucopygia) and Hartlaub's Babbler (Turdoides hartlaubii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include hartlaubii as a subspecies of Turdoides leucopygius. Gender agreement of leucopygia follows David and Gosselin (2002b).

May form a superspecies with Hartlaub's Babbler (Turdoides hartlaubii), perhaps including also Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops) and Black-lored Babbler (Turdoides sharpei). Often treated as conspecific with Hartlaub's Babbler (Turdoides hartlaubii).

Proposed subspecies clarkei (from R Baro region of extreme south-western Ethiopia) merged with omoensis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucopygia (Rüppell, 1840)   -  Central Eritrea and adjacent northern Ethiopia.
  • limbata (Rüppell, 1845)   -  South-western Eritrea and immediately adjacent eastern Sudan south to central Ethiopia.
  • smithii (Sharpe, 1895)   -  East-central Ethiopia R to north-western Somalia.
  • lacuum (Neumann, 1903)   -  South-central Ethiopia.
  • omoensis (Neumann, 1903)   -  South-eastern Sudan and adjacent south-western Ethiopia.
