Subspecies
Bradypterus thoracicus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Spotted Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella thoracica) and Baikal Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella davidi) following Round and Loskot (1995).
Formerly considered conspecific with Spotted Grasshopper-warbler (Locustella thoracica), but differs vocally, morphologically and in migratory behaviour.
Proposed subspecies shanensis, described from specimens in non-breeding range (Myanmar), now considered to refer to suschkini, with which therefore synonymized; characters of stresemanni, described from south-eastern Russia (Amurland), fall within range of variation of nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
suschkini (Stegmann, 1929) - Breeds in south-central Siberia from Altai east to south-western Transbaikalia. Non-breeding south-eastern Asia (probably Myanmar and Thailand).
davidi (La Touche, 1923) - Breeds south-eastern Russia (south-eastern Transbaikalia east to western Amurland) and north-eastern China (south to northern Hubei). Non-breeding south-eastern Asia (probably northern Indochina).
shanensis Ticehurst, 1941 - Mountains of northern Myanmar. Winters to lowlands of Thailand.
