Size

First Described (Guide)
(Gray, 1870)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest to about 700 m. Occasionally observed in coastal secondary growth.

Range (Guide)
Solomon Islands (B) (NB).

Guadalcanal, Malaita and San Cristobal (eastern Solomon Is).
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Degradation of forest through logging and hunting are the main threats.

Habits
Usually seen flying overhead or in mixed pigeon flocks, often with Red-knobbed Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula rubricera) and Island Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pistrinaria) in fruiting trees.

Voice
A deep, prolonged 'coolooo', rising in pitch then descending.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Barking Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula latrans), Vanuatu Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula bakeri) and New Caledonian Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula goliath). This group also shows some affinities with the Pinon's Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pinon) species-group.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Island Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pistrinaria) which is pale grey with paler spectacles, green-grey upperparts and chestnut only on the undertail-coverts and with Yellow-legged Pigeon (Columba pallidiceps) which has a pale head, glossy black body and yellow legs.
