First Described (Guide)
(Bonaparte, 1854)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest to about 1100 m, whereever there are fruiting trees.

Range (Guide)
Papua New Guinea (B) (NB), Solomon Islands (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Logging and forest conversion are the main threats.

Voice
A deep, slow 'whoohoo' starting on a level pitch then rising and increasing in volume before dropping in pitch at the end.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Spice Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula myristicivora).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • rubricera (Bonaparte, 1854)   -  Bismarck Archipelago, from New Hanover, New Ireland and Tabar, Lihir, Tanga and Feni Is, through Watom and Duke of York to New Britain, Lolobau, Sakar and Umboi.
  • rufigula (Salvadori, 1878)   -  Solomon Is (except Rennell).


Similar Species
Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica) and Spice Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula myristicivora) both being superficiailly similar but with blackish ceres.
