Pseudoseisura cristata (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rufous Cacholote (Pseudoseisura cristata) and Grey-crested Cachalote (Pseudoseisura unirufa) following SACC (2005).

Genus has no obvious close relatives within the family. Forms a superspecies with Grey-crested Cachalote (Pseudoseisura unirufa) and formerly treated as conspecific, but differs ecologically and vocally (important differences in vocalizations demonstrated by playback experiments), and possibly also in social system and nest architecture.
