Subspecies
Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca), Hume's Whitethroat (Sylvia althaea) and Small Whitethroat (Sylvia minula) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993), cross-regional species, are retained as separate species contra AERC TAC (2003) who include althaea and minula as subspecies of Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca).

Studies indicate additionally that subspecies margelanica may represent a fourth species. Further study needed. Proposed subspecies snigirewskii (from Turkmenistan) largely inseparable from, and therefore synonymized with, nominate; jaxartica (southern Kazakhstan) falls within range of clinal variation of nominate, with which likewise synonymized; poorly differentiated chuancheica (Upper Huang He, south of Gobi, in northern China) included within margelanica.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • minula Hume, 1873   -  Breeds south-eastern Caspian region (south-eastern Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan) east to western China (Xinjiang), probably also eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. Non-breeding from Arabia east to north-western India.
  • margelanica Stolzmann, 1898   -  North central China. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Margelanic Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia margelanica).
