Subspecies
Forms a species group, and has commonly been treated as conspecific, with Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler (Erythrogenys erythrocnemis), Spot-breasted Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys mcclellandi), Black-streaked Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys gravivox) and Grey-sided Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys swinhoei), all having similar plumage.

Proposed subspecies haringtoni (Himalayas from Sikkim east to Bhutan) merged with ferrugilatus.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrogenys (Vigors, 1832)   -  North-eastern Pakistan (Murree Hills) east to northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh).
  • ferrugilatus Hodgson, 1836   -  Nepal east to Bhutan.
  • imberbis Salvadori, 1889   -  Eastern Myanmar.
  • celatus Deignan, 1941   -  North-western Thailand.
  • haringtoni Baker, ECS, 1914   -  Himalayas (Sikkim to Bhutan).
