Subspecies
No subspecies.

Pomatorhinus erythrocnemis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-Babbler (Erythrogenys erythrogenys), Black-streaked Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys gravivox), Spot-breasted Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys mcclellandi) and Grey-sided Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys swinhoei) following Collar (2006).

Forms a species group, and has commonly been treated as conspecific, with Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-Babbler (Erythrogenys erythrogenys), Spot-breasted Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys mcclellandi), Black-streaked Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys gravivox) and Grey-sided Scimitar-babbler (Erythrogenys swinhoei), all having similar plumage.
