Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland and transitional dipterocarp forest. It is highly terrestrial, favouring flat areas with only sparse undergrowth, particularly in dry, coastal areas. From sea-level - 750 m.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging, mining, and trapping for food and trade are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica), Mindoro Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba platenae), Negros Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba keayi) and Sulu Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba menagei). All have been considered conspecific by some authorities.

Proposed subspecies basilanica is a synonym of bartletti.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

leytensis (Hartert, 1918) - Samar, Leyte and Bohol (central-eastern Philippines).
crinigera (Pucheran, 1853) - Mindanao and Dinagat (south-eastern Philippines).
bartletti (Sclater, PL, 1864) - Basilan (south-eastern Philippines).
