Subspecies
Otus megalotis was split into Philippine Scops-Owl (Otus megalotis), Otus everetti and Otus nigrorum by Miranda et al. (2011), based on molecular and morphological differences. This treatment is currently under review by the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group.

Probably forms superspecies with Mentawai Scops-Owl (Otus mentawi), Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), Collared Scops-Owl (Otus lettia), Sunda Scops-Owl (Otus lempiji), Japanese Scops-Owl (Otus semitorques) and Palawan Scops-Owl (Otus fuliginosus). Older name Otus whiteheadi sometimes still used, now rejected. Formerly treated as conspecific with Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), but shown to be vocally distinct. Subspecies boholensis doubtfully distinct from everetti.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • megalotis (Walden, 1875)   -  Luzon, Marinduque and Catanduanes.
  • everetti (Tweeddale, 1879)   -  Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Mindanao and Basilan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mindanao Lowland Scops-Owl (Otus everetti).
  • nigrorum Rand, 1950   -  Negros. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Visayan Scops-Owl (Otus nigrorum).
  • boholensis McGregor, 1907   -  Bohol.
