Sulu Archipelago, southern Philippines.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Forest habitat destruction and possibly trapping for the cage-bird trade are the main threats.

Subspecies
May belong in superspecies with Green Racquet-tail (Prioniturus luconensis), Blue-crowned Racquet-tail (Prioniturus discurus) and Yellowish-breasted Racquet-tail (Prioniturus flavicans), or alternatively with Montane Racquet-tail (Prioniturus montanus), Mindanao Racquet-tail (Prioniturus waterstradti) and Blue-headed Racquet-tail (Prioniturus platenae). Sometimes still treated as conspecific with Montane Racquet-tail (Prioniturus montanus).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Possibly confusable with Tanygnathus parrots, but smaller, appearing shorter-tailed (except for racquets which can be difficult to see) and has pale (not red) bill (female Blue-backed Parrot (Tanygnathus sumatranus) has white bill also but bill is much larger).
