Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green Racquet-tail (Prioniturus luconensis), probably Yellowish-breasted Racquet-tail (Prioniturus flavicans) and debatably Blue-winged Racquet-tail (Prioniturus verticalis). Sometimes considered conspecific with Yellowish-breasted Racquet-tail (Prioniturus flavicans), and previously with Blue-headed Racquet-tail (Prioniturus platenae).

Proposed subspecies nesophilus of Catanduanes I is synonym of whiteheadi.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • whiteheadi Salomonsen, 1953   -  Luzon south to Bohol, northern and central-eastern Philippines.
  • mindorensis Steere, 1890   -  Mindoro, north-central Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mindoro Racquet-tail (Prioniturus mindorensis).
  • discurus (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Mindanao, Basilan, Sulu and Olutanga, south-eastern and south-central Philippines.
