Voice
Similar to Mindoro Hornbill (Penelopides mindorensis) though perhaps higher-pitched 'wek wek-wek-wek'. Sometimes utters a nasal and high-pitched 'tres'-tres'-tres' (hunters in Southern Negros recognised the species by its nasal 'kree'-kree'-kree'). It also gives quick and agitated nasal 'aunk-aunk-aunk' especially while in flight.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Luzon Hornbill (Penelopides manillae), Mindanao Hornbill (Penelopides affinis) and Mindoro Hornbill (Penelopides mindorensis), and all formerly considered conspecific. Sulawesi Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus) also treated as conspecific by some authors.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ticaensis Hachisuka, 1930 - Ticao, in north-central Philippines.
panini (Boddaert, 1783) - Masbate, Panay, Sicogon, Pan de Azucar, Guimaras and Negros.

Similar Species
Writhed-billed Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus waldeni) which is larger with a red bill, pale, central tail-band and male has a dark rufous head.
