Subspecies
Aegotheles insignis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Feline Owlet-Nightjar (Aegotheles insignis) and Spangled Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles tatei) following Pratt (2000).
Perhaps forms superspecies with Moluccan Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles crinifrons) and Spangled Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles tatei). Until recently treated as conspecific with Spangled Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles tatei), but studies suggest that it should be afforded specific rank. Birds of south-eastern New Guinea formerly separated in subspecies pulcher.
