Habitat
Dense, humid forest along the courses of mountain streams and remote valleys from low to mid altitude. Also, plantations.

French Polynesia (B).

Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.

Population
Estimated population is 470 - 917 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Destruction of upland forest habitat by feral cattle, horses, goats, sheep and pigs appear to be the main threat.

A soft 'treet-tee-tee'. Also a loud, harsh alarm call.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus), Cinnamon-banded Kingfisher (Todiramphus australasia), Tahiti Kingfisher (Todiramphus veneratus), Tuamotu Kingfisher (Todiramphus gambieri) and Chattering Kingfisher (Todiramphus tutus).

No subspecies.
