Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon. Forms a superspecies with Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus), Cinnamon-banded Kingfisher (Todiramphus australasia), Tahiti Kingfisher (Todiramphus veneratus), Tuamotu Kingfisher (Todiramphus gambieri) and Marquesan Kingfisher (Todiramphus godeffroyi).

Subspecies marinus, sacer, manuae and pealei of Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) might actually belong in this species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • tutus (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Tupai, Maupiti, Bora Bora, Tahaa, Raiatea, Huahine and Tahiti (Society Is).
  • atiu (Holyoak, 1974)   -  Atiu (south-eastern Cook Is).
  • mauke (Holyoak, 1974)   -  Mauke (south-eastern Cook Is).
  • ruficollaris (Holyoak, 1974)   -  Mangroves of Mangaia I. (southern Cook Islands).


Similar Species
Mangaia Kingfisher (Todiramphus ruficollaris) which has a pale orange neck and orange above a dark eye-stripe.
