Forms a superspecies with Black-cheeked Warbler (Basileuterus melanogenys) and originally described as an isolated subspecies of Black-cheeked Warbler (Basileuterus melanogenys). The two are still sometimes considered conspecific, but subspecies of Black-cheeked Warbler (Basileuterus melanogenys) become greyer above and whiter below towards south-east, whereas present species, farther to south-east, is distinctly olive above and yellowish below.
