Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pirre Warbler (Basileuterus ignotus), and sometimes considered conspecific.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

melanogenys Baird, 1865 - Central and southern Costa Rica.
eximius Nelson, 1912 - Western Panama in vicinity of Boquette (Chiriquí).
bensoni Griscom, 1927 - Western Panama in vicinity of Chitrá (Veraguas).
