Genetic and morphological analyses indicate that this species and Moustached Antwren (Myrmotherula ignota), Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula surinamensis), Amazonian Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula multostriata), Pacific Antwren (Myrmotherula pacifica), Cherrie's Antwren (Myrmotherula cherriei), Klages's Antwren (Myrmotherula klagesi), Stripe-chested Antwren (Myrmotherula longicauda), Sclater's Antwren (Myrmotherula sclateri) and Yellow-throated Antwren (Myrmotherula ambigua) represent a monophyletic group (the "streaked antwren assemblage"). Present species is closely related to first of those, which was treated as a subspecies of it by earlier authors, but recently shown to differ vocally and in plumage. Studies needed in order to determine whether any diagnosable differences exist among the various populations.
