Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Glaucidium minutissimum (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Least Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) and Subtropical Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium parkeri) following SACC (2005), and Central American Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium griseiceps), Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium sanchezi) and Colima Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium palmarum) following AOU (1998).

Considered member of Least Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium minutissimum) complex, which also includes Colima Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium palmarum), Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium sanchezi), Subtropical Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium parkeri) and Amazonian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium hardyi).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • occultum Sharpe, 1875   -  Southern Mexico (south-eastern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca and Chiapas).
  • griseiceps Sharpe, 1875   -  Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.
  • rarum Griscom, 1931   -  Costa Rica and Panama.
