Subspecies
Trogon viridis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into White-tailed Trogon (Trogon viridis) and White-tailed Trogon (Trogon chionurus) following SACC (2009).

Forms a superspecies with Baird's Trogon (Trogon bairdii), Citreoline Trogon (Trogon citreolus) and Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus) and sometimes considered conspecific with Baird's Trogon (Trogon bairdii), from which subspecies chionurus differs mainly in belly colour and female's undertail pattern, with habits and vocalizations rather similar. DNA studies suggest present species may actually be closer to Violaceous Trogon (Trogon violaceus) and Blue-crowned Trogon (Trogon curucui). Subspecies chionurus sometimes considered a distinct species. Birds from south-eastern Brazil described as subspecies melanopterus, but individual variation, as well as overlap in biometrics with populations elsewhere in species' range, render separation doubtful. Species commonly, but incorrectly, treated under the name Trogon strigilatus; this name was applied to female in same publication as, and just before, first use of viridis, but it was subsequently dropped in favour of present name on principle of first reviser.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • chionurus Sclater & Salvin, 1871   -  Atlantic slope of western Panama through Canal Zone (whence on both slopes) to Colombia west of eastern Andes, and western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-tailed Trogon (Trogon chionurus).
  • viridis Linnaeus, 1766   -  East of Andes from Colombia south to Peru and northern Bolivia, and east to the Guianas, Trinidad and eastern Brazil (Maranhío, northern Mato Grosso, Alagoas, and Bahia to Sío Paulo).
  • melanopterus Swainson, 1838   -  Tropical south-eastern Brazil (Bahia to São Paulo).
