Subspecies
Appears closest to Dusky Antbird (Cercomacroides tyrannina), and until recently was treated as a highland population of latter. The two are considered to form a species group with Blackish Antbird (Cercomacroides nigrescens), Willis's Antbird (Cercomacroides laeta) and Black Antbird (Cercomacroides serva) on basis of plumage and vocal characters, and pending completion of major genetic study.
