Subspecies
Considered to form a species group with Willis's Antbird (Cercomacroides laeta), Dusky Antbird (Cercomacroides tyrannina), Parker's Antbird (Cercomacroides parkeri) and Black Antbird (Cercomacroides serva) on basis of plumage and vocal characters, and pending completion of major genetic study. Substantial vocal and distinct plumage differences among some populations of present species suggest that more than one species is probably involved. Racial identity of birds in northern Brazil (northern bank of R Amazon in eastern Amazonas and Pará) uncertain and tentatively placed in nominate, but may belong with approximans or fuscicauda. Subspecies aequatorialis and notata appear to intergrade.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrescens (Cabanis & Heine, 1859)   -  Surinam (coastal region) and French Guiana. Also northern bank of R Amazon in Brazil (eastern Amazonas, Pará).
  • aequatorialis (Zimmer, JT, 1931)   -  Eastern Andean slopes from southern Colombia (Nariño) south to north-eastern Peru (Amazonas, San Martín).
  • notata (Zimmer, JT, 1931)   -  Eastern slopes in east-central Peru (western Ucayali south to Junín).
  • fuscicauda J. T. Zimmer, 1931   -  Lowlands in eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, extreme south-eastern Colombia (southern Amazonas), south-western Amazonian Brazil (south-western Amazonas, Acre) and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, western Beni, Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Riparian Antbird (Cercomacroides fuscicauda).
  • approximans (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (from south-eastern Amazonas east to R Tapajós, south to Rondônia and Mato Grosso west of R Teles Pires) and eastern Bolivia (eastern Beni, northern Santa Cruz).
  • ochrogyna (Snethlage, E, 1928)   -  East-central Amazonian Brazil (Pará east of R Tapajós and west of R Tocantins, Mato Grosso north-east of R Teles Pires).
