by Arend Wassink from Between Observatory and Kosmostansia, Ile-Alatau NP, Almaty, Kazakhstan (song)

Black-throated Accentor (Prunella atrogularis) [XC811529]
by Ding Li Yong from Balshoye Almatinskyi Ozera and further down to Almaty, Kazakhstan (song)

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Mongolian Accentor (Prunella koslowi), and appears also to be close to Radde's Accentor (Prunella ocularis) and all three belong to a species group that also includes Brown Accentor (Prunella fulvescens), Siberian Accentor (Prunella montanella) and Arabian Accentor (Prunella fagani).

Proposed central Asian subspecies lucens (described from R Tzagma, in central Tien Shan) and menzbieri (from Katon-Karagai, in south-western Altai) regarded as synonymous with huttoni. Original spelling of species name has repeatedly been quoted as "atragularis", but this is erroneous.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • atrogularis (Brandt, 1844)   -  Breeds in northern and central Ural Mts, in north-western Russia. Non-breeding in south-western Asia.
  • huttoni (Moore, F, 1854)   -  Breeds in mountains of west-central Asia, from Altai Mts south to Pamirs. Non-breeding in south-western Asia.
