Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna, hot desert, urban areas, inlabd wetlands.

Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Eritrea (B), Iraq (B) (NB), Israel (B), Jordan (B) (NB), Kuwait (B), Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Oman (B), Qatar, Saudi Arabia (B), Sudan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates (B), Western Sahara (B).

Vagrant to Senegal.

Subspecies
Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) and Pharaoh Eagle-Owl (Bubo ascalaphus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra AERC TAC (2003) and Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include ascalphus as a subspecies of Bubo bubo.

Forms superspecies with Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) and Rock Eagle-Owl (Bubo bengalensis), with Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) (including recently separated Magellanic Horned Owl (Bubo magellanicus)) and Cape Eagle-Owl (Bubo capensis) sometimes considered part of same group. Formerly treated as conspecific with Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • ascalaphus Savigny, 1809   -  North-western Africa and northern Egypt east to western Iraq.
  • desertorum Erlanger, 1897   -  Sahara south to Mauretania and Niger, east to Ethiopia, Arabia and southern Iraq.
