Subspecies
Although approaching Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) in general plumage pattern, closest relatives are other small Mediterranean congeners. They are part of a group that also contains Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata), Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda), Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica), Tristram's Warbler (Sylvia deserticola), Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), Ruppell's Warbler (Sylvia ruppeli) and Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax). Subspecies orbitalis appears to vary clinally from north to south. Madeira birds the most distinctive, and formerly separated as subspecies bella, while those from Cape Verde Is are closest to nominate, and those from Canary Is are intermediate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- conspicillata Temminck, 1820 - Breeds south-western and southern Europe (Iberia east to Italy and Sicily) and north-western Africa (south to west-central Mauritania), also Cyprus, southern Turkey and Levant. Non-breeding mainly north-western Africa, northern Egypt, and eastern Mediterranean region.
- orbitalis (Wahlberg, 1854) - Madeira, Canary Is and Cape Verde Is.
