Subspecies
Scarlet-tufted Sunbird (Deleornis fraseri) and Grey-headed Sunbird (Deleornis axillaris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped intoAnthreptes fraseri following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Sometimes treated as conspecific with Grey-headed Sunbird (Deleornis axillaris), but the two meet in south-western DRCongo apparently without intergrading.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • idius (Oberholser, 1899)   -  South-western Guinea and Sierra Leone east to Togo. Also recorded in extreme southern Mali.
  • cameroonensis (Bannerman, 1921)   -  Southern Nigeria east to south-western Central African Republic, south to PRCongo, western DRCongo and north-western Angola.
  • fraseri (Jardine & Selby, 1843)   -  Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
