Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 300 - 3,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi (B) (NB), Mozambique, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Djibouti.

Scattered distribution from Ethiopia south through eastern Zaire and Tanzania to southern South Africa; disjunct populations in western Angola.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
African Olive-Pigeon (Columba arquatrix), Cameroon Olive-Pigeon (Columba sjostedti) and Sao Tome Olive-pigeon (Columba thomensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include sjostedti and thomensis as subspecies of African Olive-Pigeon (Columba arquatrix).

Forms a superspecies with Cameroon Olive-Pigeon (Columba sjostedti), Sao Tome Olive-pigeon (Columba thomensis) and Comoro Olive-pigeon (Columba pollenii), and all are sometimes considered conspecific. Also closely related to Asiatic Speckled Woodpigeon (Columba hodgsonii), which may belong within this superspecies.
