Benin east to western Uganda and south to Congo, western Zaire and northern Angola.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status LC
Habitat destruction and fragmentation is the main threat.

Subspecies
Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus) and White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) as a subspecies of Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus).

No subspecies.
