Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest.

Range (Guide)
New Caledonia.

Loyalty Island, New Caledonia.
 
Population
Estimated population is 5300 - 6000 (2012) and increasing.

Status VU
Loss of nesting holes due to competition with bees and illicit trade are the main threats. Loss of habitat for coconut plantations and competition with the introduced Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) may also be causes.

Voice
A raucous 'ko-kot'. A peculiar chuckling sound is uttered when feeding. A range of shrieks and chuckles.

Subspecies
Eunymphicus cornutus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Horned Parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus) and Ouvea Parakeet (Eunymphicus uvaeensis) following Juniper and Parr (1998).

On occasions has been lumped into genus Cyanoramphus. Subspecies may merit treatment as two distinct species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • cornutus (Gmelin, 1788)   -  New Caledonia.
  • uvaeensis (E. L. and E. L. C. Layard, 1882)   -  Loyalty Islands (Ouvéa).


Similar Species
New Caledonian Parakeet (Cyanoramphus saisseti) which has no crest and different head pattern, lacking black and yellow.
