Subspecies
Swee Waxbill (Coccopygia melanotis) and Yellow-bellied Waxbill (Coccopygia quartinia) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Estrilda melanotis following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Swee Waxbill (Coccopygia melanotis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
quartinia (Bonaparte, 1850) - Ec, south-eastern.
kilimensis Sharpe, 1890 - Extreme south-eastern South Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and northern and central Tanzania.
stuartirwini (Clancey, 1969) - Southern and eastern Tanzania to eastern Zimbabwe.
