Subspecies
Cabanis's Greenbul (Phyllastrephus cabanisi) and Placid Greenbul (Phyllastrephus placidus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Phyllastrephus cabanisi following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Forms a superspecies with Fischer's Greenbul (Phyllastrephus fischeri) and has in the past been treated as conspecific, but differs in morphology (plumage, eye colour, bill structure) and voice, and the two recently found to occur together in Tanzania (parts of the Udzungwas). Has also been suggested that both form a superspecies with Leaf-love (Pyrrhurus scandens) (which sometimes included in present genus), but relationship seems remote. Subspecies placidus sometimes treated as a separate species on grounds of differences in size, coloration and habitat but studies have shown, however, that its vocalizations are very similar to those of nominate (in Malawi, reacts strongly to playback of nominate from Zambia). Additional Kenyan subspecies nandensis (from northern Nandi Forest) and ngurumanensis (Nguruman Range) treated as synonyms of sucosus, as differences in coloration on which descriptions were based are small and within range of variation of last-mentioned (although birds from Nandi rather greener above, with yellow margins of flight-feathers).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
sucosus Reichenow, 1903 - Extreme southern Sudan, Kenya (west of Rift Valley), north, south-western and eastern Uganda, eastern DRCongo (south to Mt Kabobo), Rwanda and north-western Tanzania.
cabanisi (Sharpe, 1881) - North-central Angola, south-eastern DRCongo, northern Zambia (except extreme north-west) and western and south-western Tanzania (south to Ufipa).
placidus (Shelley, 1889) - Eastern Kenya through Tanzania to north-eastern Zambia, Malawi and north-western Mozambique. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Placid Greenbul (Phyllastrephus placidus).
nandensis Cunningham-van Someren & Schifter, 1981 - Western Kenya (northern Nandi Hills).
