Vagrant to Malawi.

Unknown to Angola (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 3,000 - 5,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Habits
Forages diurnally, often in association with other heron and wader species, usaully in groups of 4 - 8.

Food
Mainly young fish. In temporary wetlands where fish do not occur, frogs, aquatic invertebrates, tadpoles. Also snails, dragonflies and other insects.

Nest
A platform composed of sticks, the bowl lined with fine plant material. In small colonies of 1 - 60 nests.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 4. Incubation: 22 - 24 days.

Subspecies
Formerly considered a color phase of Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Shape and feeding behaviour similar to Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), but latter all white, Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca) which is smaller, with yellow confined to toes, and lacks reddish foreneck and white throat. Slaty Egret (Egretta vinaceigula) never feeds by spreading wings over head like Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca).
