Subspecies
Phaethornis longuemareus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Stripe-throated Hermit (Phaethornis striigularis) and Little Hermit (Phaethornis longuemareus) following AOU (2002) and Black-throated Hermit (Phaethornis atrimentalis) following SACC (2005). Phaethornis aethopyga is recognised as a valid species as distinct from Stripe-throated Hermit (Phaethornis striigularis) following SACC (2010).
One of the small hermits sometimes separated in genus Pygmornis. Usually considered to include Minute Hermit (Phaethornis idaliae), Black-throated Hermit (Phaethornis atrimentalis) and Stripe-throated Hermit (Phaethornis striigularis). However, morphological characters indicate that they should be treated as separate species, with latter two not even very closely related to present species. Minute Hermit (Phaethornis idaliae) is closest relative.
Invalid subspecies proposed include: "imatacae" based on hybrid of present species with Streak-throated Hermit (Phaethornis rupurumii) and "aethopyga" based on hybrid of Streak-throated Hermit (Phaethornis rupurumii) with subspecies ruber of Reddish Hermit (Phaethornis ruber).
