Subspecies
Horsfield's Babbler (Malacocincla sepiaria) and Vanderbilt's Babbler (Malacocincla vanderbilti) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Malacocincla sepiaria following Hoogerwerf (1966). Gender agreement of Malacocincla sepiaria follows David and Gosselin (2002a).

Previously thought to be conspecific with Black-browed Babbler (Malacocincla perspicillata). Form described from Aceh (northern Sumatra) as Vanderbilt's Babbler (Malacocincla vanderbilti) now known to be synonym of subspecies barussana of present species. Proposed subspecies liberale (north-western Sumatra) merged with barussana, and minor (eastern Java and Bali) with nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • tardinata Hartert, 1915   -  Extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • barussana Robinson and Kloss, 1921   -  Sumatra.
  • harterti Chasen & Kloss, 1929   -  Northern Borneo.
  • rufiventris Salvadori, 1874   -  Southern Borneo.
  • sepiaria (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Java and Bali.
