Subspecies
Garrulax erythrocephalus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron erythrocephalum), Assam Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron chrysopterum), Silver-eared Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron melanostigma) and Malay Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron peninsulae) following Collar (2006).

Until recently regarded as conspecific with Assam Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron chrysopterum), Silver-eared Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron melanostigma), Malay Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron peninsulae) and even Golden-winged Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron ngoclinhense). Subspecies woodi of Assam Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron chrysopterum) was initially retained in present species. Subspecies kali and nigrimentum intergrade.

Proposed subspecies imprudens (from hills of Assam northern and east of R Brahmaputra) is indistinguishable from nigrimentum.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrocephalum (Vigors, 1832)   -  Western Himachal Pradesh east to Uttaranchal Pradesh, in northern India.
  • kali (Vaurie, 1953)   -  Western and central Nepal.
  • nigrimentum Oates, 1889   -  Eastern Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, northern Assam) and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
