Subspecies
Garrulax leucolophus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-crested Laughingthrush (Garrulax leucolophus) and Sumatran Laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor) following Collar (2006).

Often treated as conspecific with Sumatran Laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor). Subspecies form two groups, differing in plumage pattern: western nominate and patkaicus, with olive-brown posterior upperparts and clear-cut breast-line, and eastern belangeri and diardi, with chestnut upperparts and more extensive, less well-demarcated white underparts.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucolophus (Hardwicke, 1815)   -  Southern Himachal Pradesh and Nepal east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh except south-east) and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
  • patkaicus Reichenow, 1913   -  South-eastern Arunachal Pradesh and north-eastern Indian hill states (south of southern Brahmaputra), eastern Bangladesh, Myanmar (except south-central, eastern and south-east) and southern China (western and south-western Yunnan).
  • belangeri Lesson, R, 1831   -  South-central and southern Myanmar (including Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
  • diardi (Lesson, R, 1831)   -  South-eastern Myanmar, north-west, north-eastern and south-eastern Thailand, Indochina and southern China (southern and south-eastern Yunnan).
