Subspecies
Closely related to Black Oriole (Oriolus hosii ), Black-and-crimson Oriole (Oriolus cruentus ) and, especially, Silver Oriole (Oriolus mellianus ) and all, together with Black-hooded Oriole (Oriolus xanthornus ), form the "Asian black-headed group".
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
traillii (Vigors, 1832) - Himalayas, Myanmar, southern China (Yunnan east to south-eastern Guizhou and western Guangxi), northern Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam.
robinsoni Delacour, 1927 - Southern Laos and southern Vietnam.
nigellicauda (Swinhoe, 1870) - Hainan I.
ardens (Swinhoe, 1862) - Taiwan.
