Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through illegal logging and land conversion is the main threat.

Subspecies
Along with Scarlet-rumped Trogon (Harpactes duvaucelii) have sometimes been placed in a separate genus, Duvaucelius. Species name sometimes misspelt orrophaeus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

orrhophaeus (Cabanis & Heine, 1863) - Peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
vidua Ogilvie-Grant, 1892 - Northern and central Borneo.
