Habitat
Primary and regenerated secondary lowland dipterocarp, riparian and kerangas to lower montane forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Singapore (E) (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture and fires are the main threats.

Habits
Usually solitary or in pairs.

Food
Insects and figs.

Voice
Song is a mournful, rapid series of 15 - 20 'pau' notes, each note slightly downslurred, descending in pitch. Lower pitched and faster than Red-naped Trogon (Harpactes kasumba).

Nest
In a hole of a rotten stump, about 1 - 2.5 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; white.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Philippine Trogon (Harpactes ardens).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

sumatranus Blasius, W, 1896 - Southern peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Lingga Archipelago and Sumatra.
diardii (Temminck, 1832) - Bangka I (off eastern Sumatra) and Borneo.
neglectus (Forbes & Robinson, 1899) - Northern Peninsular Thailand and Malay Peninsula.
