Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pale-headed Woodpecker (Gecinulus grantia), and the two are sometimes treated as conspecific. Birds from Peninsular Malaysia, tending to be a shade darker, with narrower wingbars, females also with more uniform crown and nape, are sometimes separated as subspecies robinsoni. Some individuals from northern populations, however, show similar variation, and recognition of geographical subspecies seems unwarranted.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
viridis Blyth, 1862 - Lowlands of eastern Myanmar, adjacent Thailand, northern Laos and Malay Pen.
