Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Laos (B), Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Eastern Himalyas to Indochina.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Bamboo Woodpecker (Gecinulus viridis), and the two are sometimes treated as conspecific.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

grantia (McClelland, 1840) - Eastern Nepal east to north, central and southern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
indochinensis Delacour, 1927 - South-western Yunnan, north-western Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.
viridanus Slater, 1897 - South-eastern China (northern Guangdong, Fujian).
